The Redwoods: The Reams Photo Year in Review

So for today’s edition of our year in review we’re revisiting our trip to the redwoods. Last June we headed up to Eureka for Jason and Sarah’s week-long wedding extravaganza. The very talented Stan and Jeannette (of Trailbrook) took their wedding photos, but we got a ton of great pictures of the rest of the week. Eureka has hands down the most beautiful forest I’ve ever seen.

They call these the “cathedral trees” and I absolutely agree. I felt the urge to whisper when I was among them. They are breathtaking and awe inspiring.

For perspective, you can see Sarah in this photo. She looks tiny compared to even the ferns!

We all stayed in these super cool, secluded cabins just off the trail. This was the view from our front door.
And a portrait of our friend Mark with Honest Abe.
Here are yet more photos from another hike. I really like this photo; it shows the underside of the clover-like plants (I’m quite a botanist) that were all over the trail. From above, they look like normal, if slightly unimpressive, green foliage. But from below, you can see that they have these brilliant purple and red undersides. Just like us, they need to be photographed from a different angle in order to reveal their true beauty (Yes, I just worked a pitch for you to get new portraits into a photo of a leaf).

The reception was at The Bluff House. It is absolutely gorgeous. We saw bald eagles and the owner claimed to have seen a whale breech a few days earlier. That being said, we found reason to doubt his veracity a little later on when he claimed that his 6 year old routinely made his way down the bluff from the house to the beach. With a machete.
The day after the wedding a few of us decided to hike down the path to the beach. If a six year old can do it with a dangerous weapon in one hand, we surely can make it down with both hands. All I can say is that’s one crazy six year old.
A couple hours later and much, much more sore than expected, we finally made it back to the top. Victory!
Then we mustered up the energy to go for one last hike.

On the last day we went back to the tree where Sarah and Jason got married. Here’s our self portrait.
Goodbye Orick! Goodbye Eureka! What an awesome week!
